Black birders face a unique set of challenges when exploring the outdoors, and creating a community of birders of color can help support those interested in the activity.

With that goal in mind, Black AF in STEM, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute will be celebrating Black Birders Week from May 28 – June 3.

This national initiative will include virtual and in-person events that celebrate and encourage birding enthusiasts of color. The third annual iteration of this inclusive event is set in the region and welcomes birders from around the nation to Prince George’s. Participants join the group for bird walks, meals, expert talks, and social interactions.
