The ritual of a coffee and a coffee shop runs deep. Selecting the right drink, the right company, and the right spot can make it all feel like a cozy and comfortable experience — or a delightful and indulgent one. In Prince George’s, you have plenty of options to caffeinate, from snug little shops to extravagant hotel cafes. At each one, you can enjoy a delicious drink and a lovely local experience.

Order a cup of coffee at one of these 12 local shops:

  1. It doesn’t get more local than Vigilante Coffee in Hyattsville or College Park. The founders recognized the importance of locally roasting their coffee beans and building a community around their coffee shop. Try the honey cinnamon latte, macchiato, or chronic tonic.

  2. Visit miXT Brew at the food hall in Brentwood. The shop at the Gateway Arts District is an exciting, communal spot to enjoy your morning caffeine. You can choose from the Maryland-roasted Vigilante Coffee Co., selected teas, and locally made kombucha.

  3. Turn to a classic latte or cappuccino or try something more unique, like a dirty horchata or Nutella latte, when you visit the College Park location of Compass Coffee. If cold drinks are more to your liking, they have a series of iced coffee drinks, from house blends to lattes.

  4. Visit the Mix + Mingle Coffee Lounge in Clinton. This minority-owned cafe was founded by three women as a gathering space for the community. It hosts local events, features artists, provides space for events, and serves up delicious food and drinks.

  5. Shop for a new book and drink your coffee at MahoganyBooks in National Harbor. The Black-owned, family-run shop was founded in 2007 with a focus on social entrepreneurship, cultural awareness, and self-love.

  6. If you’re looking for a sweet treat with your coffee, look no further than the Bellagio Patisserie. Indulge in a buttery croissant, waffle, tart, or pastry while you grab your cup of coffee, and take in the view of the MGM National Harbor’s artwork as you wait.

  7. The Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville serves a suite of specialty lattes, including the Turning Violet, which includes an ube syrup and lavender, and the Sweet Spice, which consists of a caramel syrup and cinnamon. You can also order a mimosa or a Bloody Mary if you’re feeling like celebrating something.

  8. What’s better than a coffee and a bagel in the morning? To find your classic morning meal in Prince George’s, head to Bagels ‘n Grinds in College Park. Turn your bagel into a breakfast sandwich to boost that morning meal.

  9. Li Chun Cafe serves up sweet affogatos, creative milk teas, extravagant lattes, and more to visitors at its College Park location. Add a Li Chun tart, a strawberry matcha mochi cookie, or a dacquoise to your order.

  10. The charming La Flor De Puebla Bakery in Riverdale is a traditional Mexican bakery serving up sweet and savory items, including sweet breads, churros, and sandwiches. While this is more of a grab-and-go situation, the food menu makes up for it.

  11. Ethiopian coffee is on a level all its own, and in Prince George’s, you can find that specialty at Shagga Ethiopian Cuisine. Since 2009, the restaurant has been serving authentic Ethiopian coffee and meals at its Hyattsville location.

  12. Add a little playfulness to your coffee when you drink it at The Board and Brew in College Park. Try a Davy Jones’ Locker, with its notes of blueberry and brown sugar, or the 4 Llamas, with its lingering mandarin orange flavors — then grab a board game off the shelf and have some fun.

  13. Head to one of Prince George’s PJ’s Coffee locations to add a treat to your coffee order. The shop prides itself on bringing New Orleans to each of its locations, and that includes the city’s sweet, fried beignets. If French-style pastries aren’t your favorite, you can go for a flaky scone, a freshly baked cinnamon roll, or a house-made muffin.
